SoJam 2014

Three weeks ago, the Grains of Time had the pleasure of competing in SoJam 2014. For those of you who don’t know, SoJam is a weekend of a cappella competition and Master Classes hosted by the Contemporary A Cappella Society (for more information, visit ). The Grains were selected via a video submission process to be one of six groups to compete in the competition portion of SoJam on Friday, October 10. We were proud to bring home third place in the competition, and an award for the best visual performance. On Saturday and Sunday, we attended a series of Master Classes taught by an incredible variety of a cappella professionals. The Grains were also fortunate to partake in two specialized workshops specifically for our group. The first was hosted by, The Funx, a five-member professional a cappella group, and the second was hosted by Avi Kaplan, who is the bassist for Pentatonix, the winners of Season 3 of The Sing-Off. Both The Funx and Avi had an incredible amount of expertise to offer our group and improve us as we head into competition season.

SoJam was an incredible experience for us, as it was also the group’s first participation in the event. We were so impressed by the caliber of talent and knowledge from the professionals teaching the Master Classes. SoJam was also a great opportunity for us to forge relationships with other collegiate a cappella groups across the nation. We would like to thank Wolfgang a cappella, our friends from right here at North Carolina State University, for hosting the event. We would also like to thank the Master Class instructors, especially the Funx and Avi Kaplan, in addition to CASA for running the event. The Grains would also like to thank you, our fans, for showing us your support throughout the process and continuing to encourage us to pursue bigger and better things. Be on the lookout for more competitions and concert news!
